A sunset departure adds a coastal cruise before the manta session

Choose a sunset trip because you want the evening light and boat ride as part of the experience. The manta viewing still takes place after dark under lights. A later departure can suit a different dinner schedule, but it should not be sold as an inferior wildlife experience without evidence for that specific night.

KONASTYLE and Iruka both offer useful sunset choices. Their departures are not at the same place, and their equipment inclusions differ. Pick the route and boat format first, then compare the exact ticket and time.

The physical setting is part of the decision. Kailua Pier is in town; Honokohau is a separate harbor north of central Kailua-Kona; Keauhou is farther south. Do not navigate to whichever place a map app labels “Kona harbor.” Follow the meeting point in your reservation.

KONASTYLE: make the sail part of the evening

The GetYourGuide product describes an evening trip along the Kona coast to Manta Ray Village. After the crew briefing, eligible guests join the guides in the water. Hot cocoa and tea are provided afterward. Snorkeling gear, wetsuit tops and nonalcoholic beverages are included; alcoholic drinks are not included in that listing.

This is a strong option when the sunset sail is one of the reasons you are booking. It is less aligned with a traveler whose only priority is the shortest ride to the manta lights. The listing requires in-water guests to swim without a flotation device. Its “not suitable” section also lists people prone to seasickness. Take those published restrictions seriously rather than assuming a catamaran makes them irrelevant.

KONASTYLE’s GYG cancellation window is 48 hours, unlike several other tours in this comparison. Check the final ticket conditions and leave yourself time to make changes.

Iruka: select sunset deliberately

Iruka’s current listing distinguishes an earlier sunset departure from a later moonlight option. Selecting an evening date alone does not establish which one you have bought. Check the actual time and option name in the calendar before paying.

The listed experience includes in-water guides, snorkel gear, a light raft, snacks and hot drinks, with a bathroom aboard. Wetsuits are rentals: US$10 for adults and US$5 for children on the listing checked 26 October 2026. Transport arrangements also need separate confirmation; do not assume hotel pickup is included because the description mentions transportation for a sunset option.

Plan dinner, clothing and the return

Avoid a dinner reservation that depends on the boat returning at an exact minute. Boarding, the viewing session and the return can take longer than your ideal timetable. Keep a relaxed meal plan and bring a dry layer for the ride after snorkeling. A sunset departure still finishes after dark.

Put phones and anything that must stay dry in suitable protection. The appeal of the outward ride is not a reason to carry unnecessary valuables onto a small boat. If you mainly want dry sightseeing, choose an explicitly bookable ride-along ticket and understand that seeing mantas from deck is different from looking down through a snorkel mask.

For accommodation, a hotel near your actual departure can simplify the late return. The where-to-stay guide separates town convenience from Keauhou and the airport-side resorts.
